Chapter Nine

Once he finished getting ready, Melton offered to pick him up from home so they could meet the others at the club. Brandon accepted this, actually more so than Tyler, who’d offered him a ride earlier. He declined because he knew Tyler would annoy him if he started talking about their relationship and what went wrong. Brandon didn’t feel like hearing this and he wasn’t ready to get into arguments with the friend who wanted to date him. He didn’t see Melton as a threat, so traveling with him to Shocks wouldn’t be an issue.

Just after Brandon applied the last little bit of mascara and eyeliner, Melton rang the bell. He grabbed his bag and sprinted downstairs so they could meet their friends at the door as they’d discussed. He saw the old Volkswagen and got in.

“Hey!” He slapped Melton’s shoulder and threw his backpack in the backseat.

“Hi, wow, you look amazing,” he beamed. “New outfit? New doo?”

“Yeah, well...” Brandon rolled his eyes. “I only added a little red to it and yeah, the show was kinda, um, successful, so I bought some things.”

“That’s great.” He smiled and pulled away from the curb.

Brandon noticed the driver looking at him for a little longer than he expected. “Um, what’s up, friend?”

“I, um, you look great, that’s all. Are you tryin’ to tempt a certain someone tonight?”

“No.” Brandon shook his head. “I dress for myself first. Besides, you know I’m only focusing on London now.”

“Yeah, but, damn.” He looked back at the road.

Brandon chuckled, then exhaled. He looked at the side view mirror and rolled his window down. It felt great being out with someone other than London tonight, only because he didn’t want them to get tired of one another. He had to admit, though, he continued to think of the older man. Brandon looked forward to spending time with him tonight when he’d come and pick him up.

“What’s up, man? I thought I told you I wanted to see your girlfriend. Why don’t you ever bring her out?”

Melton smiled wryly and made a sharp turn. “I, um, she—”

“Don’t tell me she couldn’t make it. Even when I hung out regularly, she wasn’t available to come out with us. I’m tellin’ ya, I’m starting to think that she doesn’t exist.” He laughed and ran his hand through his hair. “Is she a figment of your wild imagination?”

“Perhaps. Look Brandon, can we chat about this later? I mean, I don’t really want to discuss this now.”

Brandon raised an eyebrow. What’s the big deal? Why couldn’t Melton tell him about his girlfriend? Why couldn’t he be honest right off the bat? “Um, okay, I’ll wait until later. When we get a moment to have a quick drink, we can stand off to the side and talk a little.”

“Okay, good. I’d like that.”

Brandon nodded in agreement and stared back out of his window. What could Melton have to tell him? Why didn’t he want to chat about his woman? Wasn’t he straight? What
